Xi'an's Ancient City Wall is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, and one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. The rectangular wall is 14 kilometers in circumference, 12 meters high, and 15-18 meters wide at the top, making it perfect for cycling or walking.

History

Originally built during the early Ming Dynasty (1370-1378) on the foundation of the Tang Dynasty imperial city wall, the current wall has been well-preserved and restored. It represents over 600 years of Chinese military architecture and urban planning.

Visiting Tips
  • Rent a bicycle to cycle the entire 14km circumference (2-3 hours)
  • Best times are early morning or late afternoon for cooler weather
  • South Gate (Yongning Gate) is the most impressive entrance
  • Night illumination makes for spectacular photography
  • Bring water and sun protection for cycling
