About Potala Palace

The Potala Palace is the iconic symbol of Tibet and one of the most magnificent architectural wonders in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the seat of Tibetan government for over 300 years. The palace rises 13 stories high and contains over 1,000 rooms.

History

Originally built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, the current palace was constructed in the 17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama. The palace combines Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian architectural styles and houses countless religious artifacts, murals, and treasures. It remains the highest palace in the world at 3,700 meters above sea level.

  • Book tickets in advance as daily visitor numbers are strictly limited
  • Allow 3-4 hours to explore the palace thoroughly
  • Climb slowly to avoid altitude sickness
  • Photography is not allowed inside the palace
  • Visit early morning to avoid crowds and get the best light
