About Jokhang Temple

The Jokhang Temple is the most sacred temple in Tibet and the spiritual heart of Lhasa. Built in the 7th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site houses the most revered statue of Buddha in Tibet and attracts thousands of pilgrims daily who perform prostrations and circumambulations around the temple.

History

Built by King Songtsen Gampo in 642 CE, the Jokhang Temple was constructed to house the Jowo Rinpoche statue, brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng of Tang China. The temple has been expanded and renovated over centuries and remains the most important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists.
