Tiananmen Square is the world's largest public square, covering 44 hectares in the heart of Beijing. This iconic square has been the site of many important events in Chinese history and serves as a symbol of China's political power. Surrounded by significant buildings including the Forbidden City, Great Hall of the People, and Mao's Mausoleum, it attracts millions of visitors annually.

History

Built in 1651 during the Ming Dynasty, Tiananmen Square was expanded to its current size in 1958. The square has witnessed numerous historical events, including the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 when Chairman Mao proclaimed the establishment of New China from the Tiananmen Gate.

Visiting Tips
  • Arrive early morning to avoid crowds and see the flag-raising ceremony
  • Bring valid ID as security checks are mandatory
