The Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty architecture and one of Beijing's most iconic landmarks. This vast complex was where emperors performed annual ceremonies to pray for good harvests and divine favor. The harmonious design reflects ancient Chinese cosmology and philosophy.
History
Built between 1406-1420 during the reign of Emperor Yongle, the Temple of Heaven complex covers 273 hectares and represents the largest collection of imperial religious buildings in China. The circular design symbolizes heaven while the square base represents earth, embodying the ancient Chinese belief in 'round heaven, square earth.'
Visiting Tips
- Visit early morning to see locals practicing Tai Chi and other activities
- Walk the Echo Wall and test its acoustic properties
- Climb the Circular Mound Altar for panoramic views
- Allow 2-3 hours to explore the entire complex
