About Suzhou
Suzhou is China's garden city: 2,500 years of silk merchants, scholar-officials, and water towns that inspired Marco Polo to call it 'the Venice of the East.' Once the capital of Wu Kingdom, it became the empire's wealthiest city during the Ming and Qing dynasties, when retired officials built their 'retirement homes' as miniature landscapes—rock gardens representing mountains, ponds symbolizing lakes, and pavilions for poetry readings. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage site where classical gardens hide behind whitewashed walls, ancient canals flow beneath stone bridges, and silk workshops still weave the fabric that made the city famous. The rhythm is slow and contemplative: morning tea in a garden pavilion, afternoon silk shopping in Pingjiang Road's alleys, evening boat rides through illuminated canals. Local food is delicate and seasonal: sweet-and-sour squirrel fish, spring bamboo shoots, autumn hairy crab, and winter preserved vegetables that taste of time itself.
